Civils
Engineering Technical Excellence

Haydn Evans deliver a range of civil engineering and infrastructure consultancy services to clients across a range of sectors, including commercial, highways, industrial, residential and transport.

From small developments to large highway and civil structures, including bridges and gantries, we provide a professional, knowledgeable service whether it be for a private development or an adoptable scheme requiring local authority liaison to gain Section 38 and Section 278 Agreements.

We have extensive experience when it comes to providing design solutions for a wide range of drainage schemes, incorporating sustainable drainage (SuDS) to control water quantity, improve water quality and create areas of biodiversity and amenity. Schemes utilise a range of attenuation features and surface treatments to the appropriate Authority’s standards and approval under Section 104 and Section 106. Where required, we secure approvals for diversions under Section 185 and build-over agreements.

Our Services

Adoptable Highway Design (S38 & S278)

Designs for new (S38) and alterations to (S278) adoptable highways including link roads and estate road designs for residential or commercial development.  Including junction design, horizontal and vertical alignments.  Designs are undertaken to National Highway or Local Highway requirements and submitted for technical approval by the overseeing organisation.  We use industry standard software (Civils 3D) to produce designs and provide a full suite of engineering drawings.

Adoptable Drainage Design (S104, S106 & S185)

Utilising industry standard software we undertake adoptable drainage designs for foul and surface water drainage.  Where a gravity solution is not feasible we work with pumping station designers to provide adoptable pumping station designs.  We liaise with external parties such as the Water Authority and Lead Local Flood Authority to ensure that our designs meet the technical requirements for adoption and to gain any consents that are required.

Private Drainage, Levels & Plot Setting Out

Design of private drainage and external levels to meet requirements of Building Regulations Parts H & M.  On new developments the external levels can be critical in achieving the most cost-effective drainage design, we work with all parties to agree finished floor levels and to ensure that access to all dwellings meets the appropriate use Category.  We liaise with external parties such as the Lead Local Flood Authority to ensure that our designs meet any technical requirements and to enable discharge of planning conditions.  Plot setting out is based on Architect’s co-ordinated layout and can include external brickwork, fences, walls and driveways as required to Client specification.

Sustainable Drainage Systems

SuDS is a requirement on almost all developments to control the discharge of surface water from the site.  SuDS reduce downstream flood risk, reduce pollutants and enhance the amenity and biodiversity of a site.  Planning requirements seek to consider the integration of SuDS from inception to ensure that they are an integral part in the development of a site.  Our SuDS experience ranges from the use of permeable paving to open green SuDS such as ponds, basins and swales.  We undertake design in accordance with best practice and following recognised industry guidance such as CIRIA 753 The SuDS Manual.

Pavements

Design of pavements for private commercial and residential sites.  Taking account of proposed usage our designs in reinforced concrete, asphalt or block paving, whether permeable or impermeable, our designs provide robust finishes for your development.

Cut & Fill Models

Using Civils 3D we are able to create models that will assist with understanding the net cut / fill from a site.  We are able to take account of arisings from all site activities and identify ways to reduce the net cut/fill to result in a more balanced model, reducing costs for our clients.

Asset Management & Inspections

Management of assets and arranging of regular structural inspections as required. Assets are typically industrial facilities where structural assets include such features as pipe and pedestrian bridges, gantries, bunds, silos, storage bins, jetties as well as buildings. Liaison with operational personnel and organisation of the necessary isolations and access equipment to enable the inspections to be carried out safely. Inspections and surveys using remote access inspection techniques can be undertaken where this is most appropriate. Sometimes assets need to assessed for additional loading, alternative uses, etc. and Haydn Evas have staff experienced in undertaking such work, devising innovative, bespoke solutions where necessary.

Flood resilience of infrastructure is increasingly a concern and we can develop designs to provide the required degree of flood resilience and securing contents from Approving Authorities.

Structural Repairs

Structural inspections often highlight defects where repairs can extend the life of the asset. We have considerable experience in inspecting and surveying structures before then developing the required structural repairs. We have experience in a wide range of structures including all forms of buildings and a wide range of civil engineering structures including bridges, retaining walls and river walls.

Highway Structures

Haydn Evans have experience in designing a variety structures for highways. These could be either for private access roads, or being constructed as part of a development which will then be offered to adoption to the Highway Authority. We can develop the design from initial concept, through the Approval in Principle (AIP) process and then to construction and adoption by the Highway Authority. Previous projects have included culverts, bridges, retaining walls and VRS supporting structures. We also have experience in value engineering designs prepared by others.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are required where there is an abrupt change in level and the soil on one side is at a higher level than the other.  Typically this may be on sites with steep topography or where there is little space to enable a battered solution.  Whether the wall is reinforced concrete, crib-lock, gabions or another solution we have the experience and expertise to advise on the most effective solution to meet your needs.
