Trainee Technician / Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

We are seeking an ambitious, hardworking, and enthusiastic individual to join our expanding team as a Trainee Technician, working alongside our directors, engineers, and technicians and playing a key role in the production and delivery of project work. You will predominantly sit within our structures team, but there will be opportunities to work across the wider company, building knowledge and experience of all disciplines over time.  Whilst we are a relatively small company, we are proud to be specialists across a number of fields, including civils, structures, marine and rail, enabling us to offer a varied workload and opportunities to get involved with unusual and exciting projects.

The right candidate may, where appropriate be supported to achieve a degree qualification via the Modern Apprenticeship route and upon successful completion, would become a qualified Civil/structural Engineer.

You will possess the skills and attitude necessary for  working well in a fast-paced, professional environment, whilst potentially working towards a degree simultaneously.  You will be personable, a good communicator, versatile and have the ability to think on your feet. You will be eager to learn and able to follow instructions, working cohesively as part of the team. Equally you will have the ability to work logically and independently, allowing yourself to be challenged, but recognising when to seek support and advice.

Responsibilities

  • Site inspection/survey work
  • Technical and CAD drawings (Computer Aided Design)
  • Assisting with design and general office duties.
  • Assisting project managers to deliver project work.

Requirements

  • The role would suit someone with a scientific and mathematical academic background.
  • Maths and science GCSEs grade B or equivalent and above.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and interpret instructions, both written and verbal.
  • If wishing to pursue the Degree Apprenticeship, Universities will require 112 UCAS Tariff points (BBC at A level or equivalent) preferably in Maths or Technical Subjects and 4 GCSEs at C/4 or above including English and Maths

Experienced CAD Technicians

The Role

We are keen to offer an experienced, enthusiastic candidate the opportunity to join our company as a CAD technician. Technicians play a key role in the production of engineering design work, reporting and site work, in conjunction with engineers and other team members.  The role will be based in our Ipswich office where you will have the opportunity to work alongside a talented engineering team to deliver a wide variety of exciting projects.

We currently have 3 x roles available, one in each of the following teams –  Rail, Marine and Structures, however, opportunities to work on projects across the wider company will be available. We are looking for an individual who is ambitious, motivated, and keen to fully embrace the opportunities and benefits that the excellent training and interesting project work has to offer.

Responsibilities

  • Site inspection/survey work
  • Technical and CAD drawings
  • Assisting with design and general office duties.
  • Assisting project managers to deliver project work
  • Attend meetings and represent the company
  • Provide a mentoring/supervisory role to trainee/junior technicians.

Requirements

  • Hold a technically related qualification (not essential for the right candidate)
  • Experienced AutoCAD and Revit user within a similar industry
  • Desire to contribute to office standards.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and interpret instructions
  • Desire to contribute to company development.
  • An interest in supporting/mentoring junior and less experienced Technicians.
  • Clean driving licence.

Graduate Engineer – Rail

Our Rail team work across the industry on civil and structural projects, carrying out inspections, reporting, asset management support and design of new works. Recent project work includes extensive inspections and reporting, in some cases on high-risk structures, platform reconstruction, canopy refurbishment, new depots, car parks, bridge reconstructions and other station works. The team has an excellent reputation and has experienced strong success.

The Role

We are seeking an ambitious Graduate Engineer to join our expanding team, working alongside our directors, engineers, and technicians to produce and deliver project work. You will predominantly sit within rail, but there will be opportunities to work across the wider company, building knowledge and experience of all disciplines over time.  Whilst we are a relatively small company, we are proud to be specialists across a number of fields, including civils, structures, marine and rail, enabling us to offer a varied workload and opportunities to get involved with unusual and exciting projects.

You need to have a civil engineering degree or equivalent. Whilst work based experience within an Engineering consultancy environment would be an advantage, we  are looking for individuals who are driven, able to work well in a fast-paced environment, eager to learn and keen to progress.  You will need to be personable and able to communicate well with colleagues, fellow professionals, clients, and technical authorities.  You will be versatile and have the ability to think on your feet, with a proven record of seeking out opportunities to broaden your experience and knowledge base.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the preparation of calculations and carry out checking in accordance with relevant technical standards.
  • Carrying out site inspection, supervision and survey work as required in conjunction with other staff.
  • Assisting and guiding technicians in the production of drawing work.
  • Managing projects, with assistance where required, from conception through to construction stage.
  • Preparing and checking reports.
  • Attending client and site meetings.
  • Assist with staff training and mentoring of trainees.

Requirements

  • A UK obtained Degree in civil or structural engineering (ideally 2:1 or above)/HNC or equivalent provided experience compensates for not having a degree.
  • Working towards/willing to work towards professional qualification*
  • Ability to clearly communicate and interpret instructions, both written and verbal.
  • UK based work experience an advantage, but not essential. NB: rail experience is not expected.
  • Full driving licence

*Candidates will receive full training and support in achieving ICE professional qualification.

  • Carry out and oversee design work in various materials.
  • Attend client and site meetings.
  • Undertake surveys/site inspections.
  • Assist with staff training and mentoring of trainees and graduates.

Requirements

  • Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Chartered or near Chartered (Incorporated status would also be considered) *
  • Ability to clearly communicate and interpret instructions.
  • Experience of managing and leading technical teams
  • Track record of delivering projects through all design stages and construction.
  • Full driving licence.

James has over 20 years’ experience working in civil engineering consultancy. James’ experience spans planning support for flood risk, drainage and highway design through to detailed design. He has led planning assessments for commercial and residential schemes ranging from minor developments to major mixed used developments. James’ experience both in planning and detailed engineering design enables him to determine pragmatic approaches to overcoming planning issues and strategies that are deliverable. James works alongside other specialists to integrate designs to provide integrated solutions for clients. In his spare time, James is a keen triathlete, enjoys hill walking, watching rugby and spending time with his family (especially Bramble the Spaniel).

Jonathan has over 35 years’ experience working in civil engineering consultancy. His experience is extensive and he works across the business, and is responsible for leading all Marine work. Jonathan has developed a reputation as a local marine expert and his expertise is sought by key clients who depend upon his professional advice. Jonathan has led the design of extensive high profile schemes, including the design of a new pleasure pier at Felixstowe and the design of a jetty in the River Thames designed to berth oil tankers. His extensive experience enables him to quickly determine economical and pragmatic solutions to complex engineering problems.

Joe Palmer

BSc (Hons) MICE IEng - Head of Rail

Joe leads all Rail projects and has 20 years’ experience in engineering consultancy, predominantly in a rail and civils structures background. He is a professionally qualified Civil Engineer with experience of acting as CEM and CRE on railway projects. He has led the design of extensive major projects and has experience in all forms of structures in a railway environment. Joe has an innate understanding of the operational, time and safety constraints associated with railway projects and is able to provide expert technical advice in meeting these head on. Joe’s professional areas of interest include the examination, management and rehabilitation of existing structures, and the development of junior staff.

Mike is a structural/civil engineer with 40 years’ experience across a wide range of projects in the housing, education, commercial, leisure, health and infrastructure sectors. He is experienced in design using all major structural materials, and has a sympathetic approach to the restoration of listed buildings. Mike is one of the founding directors of the practice and leads all civil and structural engineering projects.
